Set to generate over 2,500 jobs and transform Hull city centre, the 40 acre Ferensway development comprises a new, state of the art integrated transport interchange (rail and coach/bus); a shopping and leisure complex, new homes for the Hull Truck Theatre and the Albermarle Music Centre, plus a hotel and a residential quarter.
The development team will begin building work in 2005. Based on Foster and Partners’ competition-winning masterplan, the inspirational design for the commercial element of St Stephen’s lives up to the standards already set in the city by The Deep and the KC Stadium.
The most striking feature of St. Stephen’s shopping and leisure complex will be its dramatic, glazed canopy roof structure. It will span the length and breadth of the curved ‘street’, which will be as wide as London’s Oxford Street. The roof extends through the
development, providing natural daylight and, at night, an impressive illuminated landmark. And the ‘street’ will remain open to the public 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
Residents of Kemley House will be able to take advantage of these facilities, just 200 metres away. The St. Stephen’s development will change the face and appeal of the West side of the city centre, making it both convenient and desirable as a residential location, with everything you could need on your doorstep.
